Home automation can be defined as controlling electronic devices in your home automatically by using smart devices. These devices can be controlled and managed remotely as they are connected to the internet. In home automation, the user doesn’t have to manually control them by using an app or voice assistance as in this ecosystem, the devices have the ability to trigger one another.

For instance, the lights and AC can be put on schedules so that the lights turn off when the user is not home or asleep. Moreover, the thermostat turns the air condition up about an hour before returning home from work.

Basically, home automation makes life easier and more convenient. Also, it helps in cost optimization on cooling, heating, and even on electricity bills while maintaining greater safety with IoT devices including security cameras, smoke detectors, alarm systems, and other surveillance systems.

    How  Does  Home  Automation  Work?

    Home automation works via a network of devices, connected to the internet via different communication protocols such as ZigBee, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and others. These devices are controlled and managed through electronic interfaces by using different controllers such as a mobile app or voice assistants like Google Assistant or Alexa.

    Most IoT devices are integrated with sensors to monitor changes in light, temperature, and motion. The key objective of integrating sensors is to provide real-time information about the device’s surroundings. The user triggers actuators to make physical changes to devices, the physical mechanisms such as motors, valves, light switches allow devices to be controlled remotely. 

    Levels of Home Automation

    There are three levels of home automation i.e., monitoring, control, and automation.

    Monitoring: At the monitoring level, the user can use an app to check and monitor their devices remotely. For instance, the user is able to view a live feed from a smart security camera.

    Control: Control means that the user is able to control the devices through an app remotely. For example, the user can rotate the camera remotely to see more of the living space.

    Automation: At the automation level, the devices are set up to trigger one another, like whenever an armed security camera detects motion, the smart siren goes off.

    Components of Home Automation

    The components of home automation include everything that can be connected to a network. Any device can be automated and controlled remotely or connected to the network. In the real world excluding the home of rich and famous and research laboratories, home automation mostly connects simple binary devices.

    That means home automation includes on and off devices such as electronic locks, power outlets, but also more devices including security sensors having only two states open and closed.

    Where home automation becomes truly “smart” is in the Internet-enabled devices that attach to this network and control it. Many of the earlier home automation systems were designed for home computer is the classic control unit.

    In today’s home automation systems, monitoring control and programming are distributed between a dedicated device such as a user-friendly app interface and the control panel which can be accessed using an internet-enabled tablet, smartphone, or PC.

    The companies are focused on developing innovative smart devices which are capable of offering a level of integration required to be a part of a complete home automation system. Each manufacturer has a different point of view of how these devices should be controlled and managed.

    So, whenever you buy any internet-ready household devices including a coffee maker, smart TV, thermostat, refrigerator, or washing machine, the control scheme for every device is different.

    Home automation is anticipated to be standardized in near future to let us truly benefitted from all these additional possibilities. Currently, the security vendors, specialized in home automation are focused on most critical parts of connected homes such as windows, doors, and environmental devices including carbon dioxide sensors thermostat, smoke detectors, humidity sensors, and temperature sensors) that keeps your home safe and comfortable.
